Q: Why invest in closed-end funds?
A: Closed-end funds are fully invested, unlike those of opened-end funds which must keep a portion of their assets liquid in order to meet ongoing redemption requests. What is the advantage for you? More of your money is being put to work for you. Your sources for investment income are increased; investment income can come in the form of dividends, interest, and capital gains distributions. Fees for closed-end funds are also much lower.

Q: What is the NAV?
A: The NAV—or Net Asset Value– is the value of the fund’s portfolio less its liabilities. These liabilities can include money owed to investment managers. Since the close-ended funds are traded on the open market, the prices of shares or interest in the fund will be based on whatever the parties agree to be the price. Thus we see a discrepancy between the market value of the fund and the NAV.

Q: How can I invest in the fund if I am not an investment advisor?
A: As a retail investor, you can buy the fund directly from a retail broker on the TSX. If you have an investment advisor, you can also purchase units or warrants of the fund through them.

Q: Where can I see the performance of the funds?
A: You can see the fund trading on finance.yahoo.com and entering in the corresponding TSX symbols. Aside from Yahoo! Finance you can also use www.bloomberg.com or finance.google.com. Additionally, you can visit our NAV & Financials section and click on the respective tickers to be redirected to Marketwatch.com
